Simulating Cutting in Surgery Applications using Haptics and Finite Element Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
Soft tissue cutting is an important task in surgery simulators. We use a separation of elements approach instead of destroying [2] or subdividing [1][5] the elements. Previously we have started a new cutting approach for 2D masssprings models: separating the elements [4]. It does not increment the number of elements (as in the subdivision approach) and maintains the same mass during simulations (against the destruction approach). Later, Nienhuys et. al. [6] has used the same idea to approach 3D cutting but they didn’t consider large displacements (required for cuts).

Modelling and Numerical Simulation of Cutting Stress in End Milling of Titanium Alloy using Carbide Coated Tool
Based on the cutting force theory, the cutting stress in end milling operation was predicted satisfactorily through simulation of using finite element method. The mechanistic force models were introduced in high accuracy force predictions for most applications. The material properties in the simulations were defined based on the cutting force theory, as a function of strain and strain rate wher...
متن کاملDesign of Broaching Tool Using Finite Element Method for Achieving the Lowest Residual Tensile Stress in Machining of Ti6Al4V Alloy
The aim of this study, is to use finite element simulation to achieve the optimal geometry of a broaching tool that creates the lowest tensile stress at the machined surface of the Ti6Al4V alloy. It plays a major role in reducing production costs and improves the surface integrity of the machined parts. The type and amount of residual stress determined by the thermal and mechanical loads transm...
متن کاملChip Formation Process using Finite Element Simulation “Influence of Cutting Speed Variation”
The main aim of this paper is to study the material removal phenomenon using the finite element method (FEM) analysis for orthogonal cutting, and the impact of cutting speed variation on the chip formation, stress and plastic deformation. We have explored different constitutive models describing the tool-workpiece interaction. The Johnson-Cook constitutive model with damage initiation and damag...
متن کاملPhysically Realistic Soft-Tissue Deformation in Real-Time
The use of haptics in virtual applications has become widespread in the last decade in several areas, especially in medical applications. After the integration of haptics, virtual medical simulations have been more popular than plastic tissue models or cadavers. Virtual environments are better for not only objective performance assesment but also creating desired scenarios in medical hands-on t...
متن کاملSimulating soft tissue cutting using finite element models
This paper presents a methodology to simulate cuts in deformable objects. It proposes a simple physical model of cutting in combination with a large displacement (Green) strain tensor formulation. Explicit finite elements are used to allow real-time simulations and fast topology updates during cutting procedures. Force feedback is added to increase realism.
